F.A.Q

CAN YOU REALLY PROVIDE ANTI-AGING

Science and the understanding of it have come very far in anti-aging, it is possible to have extraordinary results for the face, skin, and hair with the correct ingredients or therapies. In most cases, science is able to prolong youth or turn the clock back with results never attained before

Think of your hair care along the same lines as using a daily face wash and other skin care regimens. If you start early, just like skin care, you will be able in most cases to keep a beautiful, full head of young looking hair for life, or also be able to turn the clock back years to provide strong, youthful hair and maintain that for years to come

CAN YOU REALLY REVERSE HAIR LOSS

The short answer is yes and also no. Hair aging, thinning or loss has hundreds of contributing factors, making everyone an individual case. There is no cure for hair loss currently, but we are advanced enough in science that we are able to seriously slow or reverse the aging or loss in most cases with the correct ingredients. We are also able to do this without the use of surgery or side effect causing drugs

CAN YOU GROW A FULL HEAD OF HAIR ON A BALD MAN WHO IS 65

No. That is not realistic, but current science can revitalize any hair follicles available to wake up and start growing again, or if a hair follicle is producing a hair, we can get it to grow a stronger, thicker, longer hair. The longer the amount of time a hair follicle has not produced a hair determines the success in returning that follicle to a state of growth, it is best if the follicle is still producing a hair in the first place, and even better still if it is producing more than a miniaturized or very fine thin hair

WHAT IS MPB OR MALE PATTERN BALDNESS

In MPB, follicles slowly become miniaturized and the anagen (growth) phase of the hairs is reduced. Due to the shortened growing phase, the hair’s maximum length is reduced. At the same time, the telogen (resting) phase lengthens. This cycle slowly becomes more and more weighted toward the telogen phase

Over time, the anagen phase becomes so short that the new hairs do not even peek through the surface of the skin. Added to this, telogen hair growth is less well anchored to the scalp, explaining why there is often hair loss noted during showering

Miniaturization of the follicles causes the shaft of the hair to become thinner and thinner with each cycle of growth. Eventually, normal (terminal) hairs are reduced to villus hairs. Villus hairs are the soft, light hairs that typically cover a baby’s head

SO WHAT CAN SCIENCE DO FOR ME – GENDER MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Women respond better than men to hair anti-aging and hair growth, regardless of what age they are. In most cases a woman in her 20s or 30s can have fantastic results, whether it be having longer, thicker hair with more texture, or turning the clock back on a woman in her 40s or 50s to help her have a fuller, more dense hair count and much more youthful looking hair. Women benefit greatly from what science can offer with faster and better results than men

Men are a little different, men experience in most cases what is called male pattern baldness or MPB. There are many contributing factors, but the short story is if you have MPB, it is relentless, excels with age and requires different mechanisms to fight it. Again, the earlier a man starts a regimen the better, but like most, they start when they really notice they have lost a significant amount of hair, which is usually 2 – 5 years past when they should have started a regimen. Men can expect good to amazing results depending on their genetics, and how stringent they stay on their hair care regimen. Current science should have most men be able to see significant regrowth, or at-least have a more full, dense appearance and be able to maintain that well into old age

WHAT IS DHT

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of the male hormone testosterone, is the enemy of hair follicles on your head. Simply put, under certain conditions DHT wants those follicles dead, meaning if you have the gene that allows your hair follicles to be susceptible to attack from DHT, you will suffer from MPB

Testosterone converts to DHT with the aid of the enzyme Type II 5-alpha-reductase, which is held in a hair follicle’s oil glands. Scientists now believe that it’s not the amount of circulating testosterone that’s the problem but the level of DHT binding to receptors in scalp follicles. DHT shrinks hair follicles, making it impossible for healthy hair to survive, they are literally choked until they become so small they can no longer produce a hair

DO WOMEN SUFFER FROM DHT ATTACK

Yes. The hormonal process of testosterone converting to DHT, which then harms hair follicles, happens in both men and women. Under normal conditions, women have a minute fraction of the level of testosterone that men have, but even a lower level can cause DHT- triggered hair loss in women, and when those levels rise, DHT is even more of a problem

IS THERE SUCH A THING AS FPB OR FEMALE PATTERN BALDING

Yes. However, the term is called FPHL or female pattern hair loss, due to the fact that women typically thin and do not fully bald like a man does. There are varying levels of severity with FPHL – much more so than with a man, but typically most women start to see a change in their hair in their 30’s due to hormonal changes in the body, these changes continue and become typically stronger as women get into their 40’s. It is believed that 40% of women show significant signs of hair loss before they are 50

WHAT ARE THE PERCENTAGES OF MEN AND WOMEN THAT SUFFER FROM HAIR THINNING AND OR LOSS

While everyone suffers from hair aging, the numbers for hair thinning or loss are as follows:

Men: 25% of men see signs of hair loss before the age of 21 with 66% seeing thinning or loss before 35. A staggering 85% of all men experience thinning or loss by age 50

Women: 12% of women see thinning between the ages of 20 – 29, the number jumps to 50% of women by the time a woman turns 50

WHY DO SOME PEOPLE SHED HAIR WHEN STARTING A HAIR LOSS REGIMEN

As scary as it can seem to be to lose hair when you want to be growing it, this is actually a good sign. For a small percentage of people, when new treatment stimulates the hair follicles, providing further nourishment and encouraging regrowth, these new hairs start to grow, and they push out the old thinning hairs, which is why you may start to lose more hair than normal. This shedding stage does not happen to everyone, however, when it does, it can last between two and four weeks, as the new hairs make their way through as a normal part of the hair growth cycle

WHAT IS POST NATAL OR POSTPARTUM SHEDDING

During pregnancy, increased levels of estrogen prolong the growing stage. There are fewer hairs in the resting stage and fewer falling out each day, so you have thicker, more luxuriant tresses

After you give birth, your estrogen levels take a tumble and a lot more hair follicles enter the resting stage. Soon you’ll have more hair coming out in the shower or on the brush. This unusual shedding will taper off and your hair will be back to its pre-pregnancy thickness about six to 12 months after you give birth

IF I STOP TREATMENT OR MISS A DAY OR TWO OF TREATMENT WILL MY HAIR FALL OUT

The good news is no, it will not. However, a stringent regiment is best for short and long-term success, especially for men due to their levels of DHT compared to women. Think of it as the same as if you commit to going to the gym or plan a certain lifestyle diet change, continuity in schedule yields the best results. So, do not become overly worried if you miss a night or a full day or two here and there. That being said, if you are very irregular in your routine, some people can see a shed happen due to hormonal fluctuations, think of it as taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back. Making shampoos and or topicals a daily routine quickly becomes part of one’s daily lifestyle and becomes second nature

IS IT TRUE THAT IT IS NOT GOOD TO SHAMPOO EVERY DAY

This is simply not true, but in the cases for most department store or marketing type brands of shampoo, they are specifically formulated to give an amazing look when first using them, however, that look quickly is not attainable with continued usage of the product – this forces the consumer to find another brand or selection to get that “look” again, and the process repeats. With Ethica shampoo the formulations are engineered the opposite, the more you use the product, the better it is, and the better the results

WHAT ARE SULFATES AND PARABENS AND WHY IS IT GOOD TO AVOID SHAMPOOS WITH THESE INGREDIENTS

They’re chemicals found in beauty products. Parabens are chemicals that have been used since the 1950s to prevent bacteria and act as a preservative in deodorants, lotions, lipsticks, shampoos, scrubs, and more. Sulfates are effective cleansing and foaming agents that can be found in toothpaste, shampoo, and body washes, among other products. In 1930, Procter & Gamble created the first shampoo that used a sulfate base, forever changing the world of hair care. Royal Drene Shampoo was so important to the hair care industry that a bottle of it still sits in the Smithsonian Museum

Sulfates and Parabens can cause skin irritations in some people, which, can contribute to hair loss, they have also been linked to causing dry, dull, brittle hair because it can tear apart the cuticle that covers the hair shaft, they are also known to cause frizziness and can potentially damage color-treated hair – literally acting in the reverse of the reason they are used in the first place
