On St. Patrick’s Day – everyone is Irish! Time to unleash your inner Celtic – even as we hunker down (virtual St. Patty Day celebration anyone?). We know you’ve got the ‘green’ down – how about the hair? Generally, the Celts wore their hair long. Soldiers were known for their rounded, bowl cuts. Upper class men wore both mustaches and beards, which were usually forked or squared, while lower class men wore simple, long mustaches, often curled at the ends. Both men and women wore their hair long, often braided or in curls.
Women wore their braids pinned to the head and also incorporated knots and buns in their hairstyles. Decorative pins, golden beads, ribbons, and precious metals and stones were also incorporated, with the materials differing throughout the classes. Both men and women sometime wore bands of cloth or metal across the forehead, and women sometimes wore similar bands across the crown of the head.
Here are some modern-day twists on a centuries-old style.

Cheers to St. Patrick!
St. Patrick was born in Britain to wealthy parents around 387 AD. Legend has it that at the age of 16, Patrick was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who were attacking his family’s estate. They transported him to Ireland where he spent six years in captivity as a slave. He managed to escape but returned to Ireland as a missionary years later. Unlike other missionaries, Patrick incorporated traditional Irish ritual into his lessons. Although known as the patron saint of Ireland, Patrick was never officially canonized as a saint by the Church – he was proclaimed a saint by popular acclaim. And his legend continues to this day!
